Welcome to the Bulldawg Illustrated Basketball Report. It’s like getting stuck on the tarmac for several hours, but there’s a problem with your seat and you’re bumped to first class where your seated by a hot, super model. Well, the Dawgs finally got on a “Bad Loss” list courtesy of Arkansas. The Razorbacks came in dreaming of the Big Dance, but were welcomed to their nightmare! (Gratuitous Alice Cooper reference). Generally, the Dawgs’ offense is offensive. However, they put something together Wednesday night and left the Hogs reeling. We were able to score over 80 points in a game for only the second time this year, and it was our first time over 70 in SEC play. Including an 0-8 from Dustin Ware, the Dawgs still shot 53% from the floor. My research of thinking back over every game tells me that was probably far and away our best this year. We shot 45% from the arc, that includes Marcus Thornton going 2-2 from three-point land. It truly was a solid shooting game. Pass me that bottle … Wait, I was just told it’s no time to celebrate.
We now travel to one of the loveliest places on earth, Starkville, MS. Now you truly know why they are the bizzaro Dawgs!
And boy do they owe us. I remember the first half of last year’s game very clearly. The second half, not so much! I could not make it to God’s Little City last year because of work obligations I had on a Saturday. Once finished with work, I scramble home to pop the first cold one and get ready for a nail biter. Unbeknownst to me, my wife had hired a painter and they’re spraying the family room and the TV’s covered in tarps. Thinking on my feet, I grab a case, a cooler, and all the ice in the freezer and sprint to the basement. Knowing I would need lots of liquid courage to face my paint-covered wife after the game, I began to cram. The only reason I say this is the second half is still a little fuzzy. The good thing is the game was over by halftime. Georgia destroyed Miss St. I don’t remember the game being less than a 20 point lead the entire way. And the weird thing is I personally thought Miss St. had as much talent as anyone in the conference last year save UK. Unfortunately for them, they had internal issues and bad attitudes. They could never put it together. This year is a different story. They’re led by a UTEP transfer who’s lighting it up. Dee Best is simply being Dee Bost. And everyone knows Renardo, spelling may be wrong, Sydney can do what he wants when he wants. He just doesn’t always want to. Let’s hope he doesn’t want to play today. They’re ranked 18th in the country currently and looking to improve.
If we shoot over 50% from the floor again and if we shoot 45% from beyond the arc again, we have a chance. For such a poor offensive team, we don’t turn the ball over much at all. We just took bad shots. However, we are able to get a lot of point blank lay-ups vs. Ark because of dribble penetration and second chance points. While, the second chance points may be tougher against a bigger, atheltic team, the dribble penetration is always there. Let’s get Gerald Robinson, Jr. driving to the basket just like he did Wednesday. Then, our big guys can converge on the rim in case he shoots and misses and our shooters spot up in case of the kick out. GR, Jr is the fastest guy on the court every game he plays. Let’s use that to our advantage. We may not be going to the tourney, but let’s not mail it in either. Same for the fans. Set aside two hours today for some basement drinking, hiding from your painting wife, and watching the Dawgs. That’s what non-fall Saturdays are for. Go Dawgs!
