Welcome Katherine Parke to our team!

If you keep up with Bulldawg Illustrated at all then you know how much we love working with the Grady School students through internships. As a former high school English teacher, continuing my love of teaching through this role is very meaningful to me. I learn so much from them and the friendships last.

My first intern from UGA was Mary Boyce Hicks that joined us in the spring of her junior year in 2009. After graduation, she moved to Charlottesville, VA and we regularly meet for visits when she comes home to Georgia. She recently stayed with us on St. Simons Island and we had a wonderful chance to catch up and talk shop which led to her accepting a new position this past week with The Scout Guide after her internship there. It is a gorgeous upscale guide to some of my favorite cities like Charleston and Charlottesville. I know her work with us on guide2athens makes her such an asset for their team. She is also currently contributing to my latest project, The Southern Coterie, which allows us to keep up regularly as we launch this social network for the south next month!

Our second intern was Ryan Scates who joined us shortly after Mary Boyce. Ryan is a renaissance man and juggled classes while covering sports and becoming one of our best photographers. I am not sure how many times Claude Felton, Associate Athletic Director of Sports Communications, has been asked for permission to get in the rafters of Stegeman to shoot down on the court. Ryan served as Editor of our Athens spring sports publication for two years before law school requirements and internships took him away from us. He proposed to his wife while staying with us on St. Simons Island and interned at our own lawyer’s office in Brunswick last summer.

We have had so many neat student interns since those two super stars. Last week,we had dinner at Etienne Brasserie downtown with two of my favorites, Janell Niederriter and Ashley Hanna and their families so celebrate their graduation. It was a ton of fun to share how outstanding their children are with their parents and let them know how responsible and prepared both gals truly are for the real world. I am tearing up.

Fortunately for me, I have my sweet sophomore Pierce Persons from Macon that is just on summer vacation so I will reunite with her this fall when she returns from her travel abroad in Africa. She is on UGA panhellenic and babysits while juggling school and our requirements. I find it amazing that she is so mature and able to do it all so well. Travis Ragsdale, our sports online student editor, has been another top producer. His passion for UGA athletics and professionalism with the Sports Communications Department are impressive. Alan Lanier that interned for us in sales is now serving as our administrative assistant this spring and summer until he starts law school in the fall to become a double degreed dawg. We have been lucky.

And our luck continues…

We would like to welcome our newest team member, Katherine Parke- who came highly recommended by Ashley and Janell and has already hit the ground running. She held her own to achieve an incredible portrait of Athens legend Andrew Downs to celebrate his 70th birthday that runs in this issue of BI Athens. Here is a little bit about Katherine she shared with us:

Katherine Parke was born in Oxford, England but don’t let that fool you. She moved back to the US 8 months after and was raised in the heart of Atlanta. Her mother along with most of her family attended The University of Georgia. Despite the fact her dad went to Duke, Katherine has always been a dedicated bulldawg. She graduated from Pace Academy in 2008. The experiences at Pace instilled in Katherine to always “have the courage to strive for excellence.” And she does just that!

Once she arrived at the University of Georgia, Katherine took off and got involved. She joined the Kappa Alpha Theta sorority and got involved with UGA Hero’s. At Theta she has worn many different hats. She served on their Membership Development Committee freshman year until her junior year. Katherine also served as the facility manager and the risk manager. Through UGA Hero’s after serving on their freshman board she served on their PR/Marketing group.

Katherine has always been the kind of person who enjoys being involved and meeting new people. It is clear that this will never change. Another thing that will never change is her love for the UGA. Whether it is sitting in class or in Sanford Stadium, Katherine is always cheering for her dawgs!
