Athens, Georgia—Over 100 of the 238 families that have purchased homes in The Georgia Club, a golf course community near Athens, are former students of the University of Georgia.
“After graduation, UGA alumni move to Atlanta to make their mark in the business world, but when it comes time to raise a family, or retire, they are drawn back to Athens,” says David Muia, special assistant to the Athletic Director at the University of Georgia explains, “Because of the University, you’re never tired. There is an energy that keeps you up, you never quit learning”.
Retirees return to the Athens area for the excellent healthcare, low cost of living relative to Atlanta, and the non-stop calendar of University sports, cultural and educational activities. Seniors over 62 may audit classes for free, and nearly every night of the week, There is some great event to attend.”
Georgia Club resident Pat Hodgson was a “Bulldog” and a wide receiver and coach in the NFL. Pat’s successful career in the NFL included coaching in two Super Bowls.
Today, Pat and his wife live in The Georgia Club and Pat continues to take classes and attend UGA events weekly. “College town living can keep you young at heart”. “I can name a half dozen friends my age who stay young the same way. I’ve been taking MBA courses, one of my former teammates is taking a history course.”
Alumni with young children are moving to The Georgia Club as well. Typical are Nicole Gray and husband Mark, “We moved from Atlanta to enjoy the small town atmosphere and for the Oconee County top rated public schools, says Nicole.”
The Grays met while students at the University of Georgia, and now never miss a home game with their children and friends.
Benita Nelson, another UGA alumi loves attending UGA events with her family. “This month, we’ve been to the gymnasium, The basketball games, we been to concerts…we’ve even gone to the planetarium.”
Atlanta sportscaster , Chuck Dowdle, loves the Georgia Bulldogs and all that Athens has to offer, so he commutes from downtown Atlanta to The Georgia Club. “It’s less than 45 minutes from the stadium to my doorstep.”
Former UGA great, David Greene, one of the colleges most celebrated quarterbacks, is a member of The Georgia Club. His friend and team mate, David Pollock, a three-time All-American Heisman Trophy winner, recently joined David as a member of The Georgia Club.
