UGA Phi Kappa Psi Brothers Help with St. Simons Island Beach Clean Up – 10/27/12
Ryan Casey loves St. Simons Island. A 2012 graduate of West Hall High, he now calls Flowery Branch home. But he lived on St. Simons until he was 6 years old and continues to be a frequent visitor to his grandmother’s house there. So as a freshman at UGA, when Ryan’s Phi Kappa Psi Fraternity brothers planned a trip to the island for GA/FL weekend, he had an idea for how to spend their Saturday morning. He had seen pictures of all the students on the beach on the Friday before the game…and then the pictures of the huge mess that is left behind every year.
A family friend, Lea King-Badyna, helps to organize a Beach Sweep to clean up the mess. Locals come out and work hard to get their beach back to pre-party condition. So Ryan contacted Lea and the plan was put into motion.
At Beach Sweep 2012, the locals had some help from a group who has never been seen volunteering with this endeavor before….UGA students. Ryan wanted his fraternity to be a part of the solution…not creating the problem. So, although the Phi Kappa Psi brothers were on the beach Friday enjoying the pre game revelry with all the other UGA students, a group of them was also on the beach at 7:00am Saturday morning to help with the clean up. Ryan went around and woke up who he could, put them in cars and headed down to help with the clean up. Jake Davis (Jefferson, GA), Cody Hall (Dawsonville, GA), TJ Oakley (Oconee Co, GA), Ben Daniel (Jefferson, GA) and Josh Brito (Fairfax, VA) joined Ryan and the local volunteers.
Although the Phi Kappa Psi group was small, they were mighty and after about 2 ½ hours of hard work the mission was complete.
The Phi Kappa Psi brothers from UGA can claim a special place in St. Simons Beach Sweep history – the first UGA students to help with the clean up.
Next year they plan to have a much bigger group and offer a challenge to the other fraternities and sororities to help – BRAVO PHI KAPPA PSI!
