A beautiful day on The Plains, or Loveliest Village, or whatever you want to call this quaint hamlet known as Auburn, Ala, located just a little farther than a long punt from the Georgia state line.
And here we are now, just an hour away from kickoff on a night when the Georgia Bulldogs will either clinch the SEC Eastern Division crown and earn a trip to the Georgia Dome for a second straight year OR the Bulldogs will become an upset victim of one of Auburn’s worst football teams ever – at least record-wise. And if the 2-7 Tigers were to take down the 8-1 and 5th-ranked Bulldogs, it would surely rank as one of the University of Georgia’s very worst defeats in school history.
Weaving through the East Alabama countryside some four hours prior to this game’s 7 p.m. start, you were kind of amazed by the lack of bumper-to-bumper track moving toward the Jordan-Hare Stadium parking lots. In fact, as one Georgia beat media writer quipped, “I’ve never seen traffic this light coming into this stadium.” Indeed, makes you wonder the way Auburn’s season has gone, if this famous stadium, which seats 87,481 or so, will even be filled to capacity. And if it’s not, that would indeed be a rarity when the Bulldogs come to town.
But hey, a little while ago, they began pumping in the Auburn fight song on the big video screen that sits high above the South End Zone stands. And that song, “War Eagle Fight Down the Field,” quickly snaps you back to reality. Folks, this is still Georgia-Auburn and no matter the records of the two teams, you can’t EVER predict what will happen in this ancient series. It’s an old cliché but you can really hurl the records out the window when the Dogs and Tigers step between the white lines. And that’s been proven down through history when the heavy underdog in this game has risen up and stunned the favorite.
But again, if Georgia loses this football game it will be bad, really bad. All the optimism and feel-good nature surrounding the Bulldog program after the last two victories over Florida and Ole Miss will be negated in a hurry if the Auburn Tigers find a way to defeat Georgia tonight.
I’m going to stand by my 38-14 prediction with the Bulldogs winning. And if they do live up to that forecast, that means no costly turnovers that will encourage the Tigers to stay in the game. And it will mean Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley and the rest of the Georgia offense will be hitting on all cylinders as well as the Bulldog defense shutting down the Auburn offense, like it did against the Gators and Rebels.
Anyway, time to tee it up between the hedges? And yes, there are green hedges on each side of the field at Jordan-Hare. They’re just not as famous as the ones in Athens.
