Although many Georgia football fans, especially in recent years, see the Florida game as the biggest and most important for the Bulldogs, there’s still something about this contest today that will always occupy a special place in the hearts of the UGA faithful everywhere.
All you need to say is that it’s Georgia vs. Georgia Tech, the Dogs vs. the Jackets, the Red and Black vs. the White and Old Gold, the team from the Classic City and maybe America’s prettiest campus vs. the team from that engineering school on North Avenue in downtown Atlanta.
Since the days of the 1940s and 50s when Bobby Dodd had the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets – which still today have one of the most famous fight songs in all of college football – among the nation’s elite teams and Wallace Butts was coaching those Georgia powerhouses led by Frank Sinkwich and the immortal Charley Trippi, this game has meant everything for the supporters of those two institutes of higher learning. For one thing, the losing fans in the Tech-Georgia game have to put up with insults and some not-so-good natured kidding for the next 365 days.
Well, this year, folks, the Georgia-Georgia Tech takes on a whole new different meaning … especially for the Bulldogs. When the world of college football was literally shaken to its foundation this past Saturday night when Nos. 1 and 2, Kansas State and Oregon, went down, the Bulldawg Nation, along with the Crimson Tide Nation – and even maybe the Gator Nation – moved into full celebration mode. I don’t have to tell you the opportunities now awaiting those three teams. As everyone knows now, IF the Bulldogs can avoid an upset by the hated Bees between these hedges today and then find some way to handle the mighty Tide in next Saturday’s SEC title game in the Georgia Dome, then, yes, the University of Georgia will be bound for the Jan. 7 BCS National Championship game on the shores of Miami. Same for Nick Saban’s Alabama team. If the Crimson Tide whips up on rival Auburn today – and that appears to be a mere formality – and then defeats Georgia as everyone thinks they’re gonna do, then Bama will be in position to win its second consecutive national title. As for No. 4-ranked Florida, what the Gators need is, first off, a win over rival FSU in Tallahassee today and then Southern Cal upsetting top-ranked Notre Dame tonight. That would likely punch Florida’s ticket to Miami. I say likely because you know many of the higher echelon college football people in this country don’t want to see a second consecutive all-SEC national championship game.
Anyway, as Mark Richt has emphasized to everyone this week, his Bulldogs can’t worry about Alabama, the SEC title game, BCS championship or anything else. If their focus is anywhere but trying to stop Georgia Tech’s potent triple option and also pummel the Jacket defense, then it will be a sad Saturday night here in Athenstown.
But, again, I’ve got to believe Georgia is ready for this golden (for Tech) opportunity. The Bulldogs looked all business when they entered the stadium from the early Dog Walk this morning and with the seniors being honored on the field with their parents just before kickoff today, this team doesn’t want to play badly and have to look back on what might have been.
It’s chilly and windy down on the Sanford Stadium turf but I truly believe the Bulldogs are going to warm the hearts of all their fans throughout the state and beyond. Tech will move the ball and get its yards, and points too, but the Jackets won’t slow down Aaron Murray and that Georgia offense. My 41-24 UGA prediction still sounds good. Time to get it done, Dogs, and then everyone can turn their full attention to the ATL and mighty Bama.
