Both teams responded extremely well to the difficulties of the season … from the one games that we lost. Georgia really improved from that point (loss to South Carolina). And since the Texas A&M game, we were able to get back to what we did well earlier in the season.
We went through three extremely tough games in a row against top 15 teams, Mississippi State, LSU and A&M. We didn’t play our best game at LSU and they played very well. But we had a two-minute drive to win the game. And in the A&M game, we started our very poorly in that game. Give A&M credit, they played very well and their quarterback (Johnny Manziel) is very good. But we didn’t play our best that day.
Success doesn’t just continue in this business. Every year is a new process. You have only 25 percent of your team returning sometimes. If you lose sight of the process, you’re not going to be successful. What you’re trying to do right now is the most important thing. I think Michael Jordan said it best, all the shots he had made in the past didn’t matter. The only think that mattered was the shot he was taking now.
Aaron Murray is a very efficient quarterback. In our pass rush, we like the four-man rush and if you give a quarterback like Murray time to go through his progression, he’s going to find his receivers open in your secondary.
I told our team in our first meeting before this season that you’re not the national championship team. That was last year’s team. But I’ve been pleased with the way this team has come together and played as a unit. I like the way they’ve bought into our concept of being a complete team.
Georgia has a lot of good players. They have a lot of team speed on defense and good pass rushers. Todd Grantham has really done a good job of developing this team into one of the best defensive teams in the country. They’re extremely talented and we’ll have to do a good job executing on offense to have success against that team.
The turnover ratio is a very important factor in winning and losing. We emphasize to our players to get turnovers and we emphasize ball security to our offense.
No question, not winning in last year’s SEC championship game (even though Tide did go on to beat LSU in national title rematch) was very disappointing to our team. You’re here, you have the opportunity and if you have success, you can control your own destiny (reach national title game against Notre Dame).

This is one of the greatest games in the country. We played in a lot of national championship games at Florida State and the passion of this game is unbelievable.
That was our plan coming into this season; we wanted to get to the national championship game. And this game I guess is the closest we’ve gotten to it. But coming to Georgia everyone realized how important it is to win this game. Now, the winner of this game gets to play Notre Dame for the national championship.
It’s just very difficult to go through a season undefeated. Notre Dame and Ohio State did it this season and hats off to them. But it’s very difficult to go undefeated. We had only one team at FSU to do it. Most of the national champions over the years haven’t been undefeated.
(On Alabama blitzing Aaron Murray) There are a lot of ways to handle the blitz. Of course, you’ve got to get rid of the ball quickly. And the main thing, your quarterback has to understand what his protection is with the blitz. Getting his team into the run game is a way to handle it and it depends on protection. And I think Aaron understands this as well as any quarterback I’ve ever coached.
I didn’t try to minimize Shawn Williams calling our defense soft. And he didn’t just say that to our team, he blurted it out for the whole world to hear. Sure, it hurt some feelings but they knew Shawn’s heart when he did it. He just wanted our defense to play better and become the defense everybody thought we would be.
Alabama has certainly improved throughout the season; they’ve a very disciplined team and one of the better teams in the country.
Jarvis Jones is an unbelievable leader for us. He’s not about awards but he just loves to play football, period. He’s excited about Georgia and this opportunity. Jarvis is a sack artist and he’s got spin moves off the edge, he can go up the middle, he can strip the ball. And he’s really become a vocal leader this season.
We know, in this game, even if we get out to a 10-0 lead, it can evaporate fast. And we also know if we get behind, we have to keep playing – it’s not over. When we fell behind South Carolina early of course, we didn’t have an answer so, hopefully, we learned from that.
We don’t talk about that (Aaron Murray’s troubles in the Bulldogs’ biggest games). It’s like taking a test in school, if you prepare well, you’re going to do well. I think Aaron has prepared for this game and he’ll be ready.
Do I think we’re the two best one-loss teams in the nation? Yes, because that’s the way the BCS voters voted. That’s where we are now.
What do I think of our last blackout game against Alabama (41-30 loss)? I think, ‘Don’t wear black jerseys.’ We’re wearing red tomorrow.
Alabama will be trying to punish us but I think there will be punishing licks on both sides. You just have to take advantage of the opportunities when they present themselves.
(AJ) McCarron and Murray are very similar in style. Both have strong running games behind them and both are very good at getting their team into the right plays. Both pass well off play action and both are very good leaders.
Will I vote the winner of this game No. 1? No, I would vote Notre Dame No. 1 and the winner of this game No. 2.
