Following an up-and-down weather pattern in the seven days leading up to this afternoon’s Capital One Bowl, the first day of 2013 has produced picture-perfect football weather as the Bulldogs and Cornhuskers get set to tangle here at Florida Citrus Bowl Stadium.
Fact of the matter is, the conditions are like late September, early October anywhere else in the country as the Georgia and Nebraska fans are in their usual short-sleeved attire – a number of them donning shorts – while relishing the 70-plus degree temperatures and bright sunshine enveloping the stadium. \
But weather aside, these Bulldogs and Cornhuskers should be ready to get after it no matter the playing conditions. Both teams are anxious to atone for grueling defeats in their conference championship games, 7th-ranked Georgia of course coming five yards and four points short of playing in the national championship game with a 32-28 loss to Alabama and Nebraska being stomped 70-31 by the Wisconsin Badgers in the Big Ten title match.
So if the Bulldogs and Cornhuskers aren’t both motivated to play their best and win this one, then they should do a gut check to see why they ever chose to play college football in the first place. Georgia can cap the 2012 slate with a 12-2 record and thereby become only the third team in school history to notch a 12 win season, the other two being the unbeaten, 12-0 Herschel Walker-led national champions of 1980 and the 13-1 2002 Georgia team. And the Huskers, with an upset victory over the 10-point favored Bulldogs, can sew up an 11-3 finish and also be able to carry great momentum into the 2013 campaign.
Talking with the Georgia players and coaches all week, you get the feeling the Bulldogs are indeed ready to put everything together and send one of Georgia’s greatest senior classes ever out with a win and a good feeling about their entire UGA experience. And with all the reports coming out of the Nebraska camp, you also get the feeling these Huskers will be supremely motivated when today’s kickoff rolls around in less than an hour from now.
What’s going to decide today’s outcome? I clearly think it’s going to be the running game … on both sides of the ball. Can the Bulldogs, namely Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall, continually chew up the real estate against a Husker defense that was hammered for 500-plus yards by Wisconsin? And, conversely, can Nebraska’s potent running attack, which ranks eighth in America find success against Georgia’s rugged defensive front?
All that said, who knows, it could come down to the two talented quarterbacks, Aaron Murray and Taylor Martinez, and their right passing arms. If Murray, who may or may not be playing his final game in a Georgia uniform, goes out and throws for 300 yards, or Martinez does likewise, then neither team may need to rush for 200 yards or more.
Nebraska is the home team for today’s battle and is wearing its traditional white helmets, red jerseys and white pants. The Bulldogs are in their road white jerseys with the usual red helmets and gray pants. Since these Dogs usually thrive on being the visiting team, I’m staying right with my prediction that appeared in our Bulldawg Illustrated bowl preview issue. Georgia 35, Nebraska 21.
