Rockin' Rob's 'I wish this was football, but hoops will have to do' Dawg report
Posted on Jan 16, 2013 by Rob Sherrell |
Welcome to all of you gluttons for punishment to decipher what is Georgia basketball. Or, what it has become. Let’s get in the way back machine before we talk about Mizzou. Let’s go back to Tubby Smith’s time at UGA. I will argue he’s one of the five best coaches in college basketball and his resume will back me up. Then, after two productive years, Rick Pitino takes the Celtics job and Tubby bolts for Kentucky. Then, a couple of years later, we hire Jim Harrick. He may be the best Xs and Os coach in the world. We then run him off because of indiscretions much less troubling than those committed by two teams that have recentlt won National Titles. So within the last 16 years, we’ve had two of the best coaches around but our program has to fight to crack the top 300. But, that’s where we are.
So now in 2013 we head to Missouri. Gary Pinkel won’t be coaching but there will be talk about “Old Man Basketball”. Mainly because we look like a bunch of old men out there. Mizzou is really good. They’re a top 10 program and they love to pressure the ball. We handle pressure very poorly. We panic and throw the ball away the first three or four times we’re pressured every game. I’d pressure us every inbound pass the entire game. You may expend a bunch of energy, but at least your starters can sit the entire second half. It’s gonna be ugly tonight. How do I know for sure? This past weekend, we played a really bad Miss St team. It was a one or two point game at approximately the five minute mark. Then, we just fell apart. I’m not even sure what the final score was. I got so mad with :45 left in the game that I changed the channel. The question is now … will we win a conference game?.
The answer is yes.
Not because we’re good, but because the SEC is really bad. Outside of two or three teams, the conference is bad from top to bottom. There are a lot of wins out there. However, we missed a golden opportunity this past weekend. Does all of this mean I love my Dawgs any less? Of course not. It just means I drink and swear a lot more when watching. So turn on and tune in tonight. It might not be pretty. But we’ve all ended up with a “not pretty” at some point in our life. Go Dawgs!
