Rockin' Rob Sherrrell's, keep this hot streak rollin', Uga Hoop Dawgs report

Welcome to the Bulldawg Illustrated Hoops Report.
It’s like “Singing in the Rain” if by singing you mean winning and by rain you mean SEC. Well, our Dawgs found a way to get a W in Knoxville last Wednesday night. It wasn’t easy, but we’ve got KCP. Thus, we always have a chance. We’re started to hold on to the ball a little better. We’ve been saying all season long at Bulldawg Illustrated that if this team can limits turnovers to ten a game, we’ll have a chance to win some games. In the last three games, we’ve committed 16,13, and 11. So that trend appears to be heading in the right direction. The other big thing we’ve been preaching is keeping the best players on the floor. We’ve got KCP and four or five other serviceable players. After that, the cupboard is bare. So we need to keep the junk in the trunk and the scorers on the floor. This team still isn’t a good team. So we need all the advantages we can get. Keeping guys on the floor for extended minutes that reduce the efficiency and productivity of the group should not be acceptable. In the wild, those guys are eaten alive. In Athens, they should be benched.
While we need to look forward to the next game vs Texas J & M (Yeah, Johnny Manziel petitioned the board of Regents to change the name), let’s go way back to this past Wednesday to see how things played out. This game was a lot like the last three wins before it. UGA looks solid, but not spectacular, for 25-30 minutes. Then the other team puts together a run. We all expect these guys to fold. Then we pull away in the last three or four minutes. While we’re still turning it over more than we’d like to, we’re hanging on to it at crunch time and guys are making shots. KCP scored 24 against UT. While no one else on the team is averaging double figures, one or two guys are stepping up every game. And usually it’s a freshman.
This game it was senior Vincent Williams with 10 and freshman Kenny Gaines with 12. Also, we shot 55% from three while they shot 27%. And with the game on the line, KCP hit a huge three and Gaines drained a beautiful baseline jumper. Both were made with the shot clock running out and both were back breakers. We got a little lucky though. Tennessee turned it over 13 times and had a poor overall shooting night. However, aided by some home cooking they kept themselves in it by going to the foul line twice as much as us, 28-14. But in the end, it was all Dawgs!
When the Manziels roll into town Saturday night, we’ll be trying to do something we don’t do a lot. Beat a team twice in the same regular season. My guess would be we’ve last done that to the Lamecocks. How bout one of you internet researchers look that up and get back to me, K? In the first meeting, the Dawgs beat them up good for 32 minutes to take a 50-36 lead with eight minutes to go. Then they went on a 16-5 to cut it to three. We missed a shot with :26 left to go and Donte Williams tipped it in to seal the game. Speaking of that, let me tell you something about Williams. We need to get him more involved in the offense. He’s doing a lot of the little things. He’s setting really good screens. He had three offensive boards again UT. He’s blocking shots. And he’s finding himself wide open under the basket at least two or three times a game and we’re just missing it. I know it’s easier to see when I’m drunk watching TV, but we need all the easy baskets we can get. We are not a proficient offensive machine, so we need more than a couple of gimmes each night and Donte can deliver those.
Look, I’ve said all year let’s get 40 points from KCP and any two other people. Then the rest of the team can pour in 20. And it’s a race to 60! I thought that was our best chance to win. However, we’re average 67.5 in the last two because our KCP plus two group is averaging 43.5. So let’s race to 65 now. A couple of ally-oops to Donte and we’re around 70! Hell, you can get a ticket for doing 70! Now we all know how hard it is to beat the same team twice. But they’re still trying to beat us once! So head on out to 21st Century style arena we have. I’ll be there. And if you find a flask on the ground, bring it to me. I seem to always lose that thing after it runs out! Go Dawgs!
