Rockin' Rob Sherrell's Beat the Hogs Uga Hoop Dawgs report

Welcome to the Bulldawg Illustrated Hoops Report.

If getting chipped on the road were a fishing rod, then we’d be reeling right now as we got hooked and rooked last Saturday in Oxford. There was a very question intentional/flagrant/malicious/whatever foul called on Kenny Gaines’ inadvertent elbow to the nose of Marshall Henderson with six minutes to go that was huge for Ole Miss. Henderson probably deserves an Emmy for his acting job. Then with .06 on the clock and the game tied, we ran a lob play out of the timeout and hit a wide open Donte Williams who was hammered on the dunk attempt. While I’m generally not one to call fouls on the final shot of the game, this was egregious. It had to be called. While Donte can be iffy at the free throw line and may not have made either one, the no-call removed legitimacy from the final out come as the Dawgs fell apart in OT. I must admit I was dead wrong about Henderson. He made two huge defensive plays that swung momentum and he took the game over late. The Dawgs played well as a team but in the end, the officiating decided it and the home team won. By the way, they out shot us at the foul line 36-19.

That was a tough loss. But we can’t hang our heads. We’ve got to get right back on the road and face a team that doesn’t lose a lot at home. The Arkansas Razorbacks are 16-9 overall but 15-1 at home with their only loss coming to sixth ranked Syracuse. They also average about 17 points a game more than we do. They also average about 17 points more at home than on the road. So this will not be easy. We will probably need to score in the high sixties to low seventies to win this game. We are usually able to draw teams into a slower paced game, but we’ve got to execute better on the offensive end to have any chance. Their coach is good and generally likes to press. Guess what, we don’t handle the press well at all. If we can’t handle the press, that means turnovers. And turnovers have been our Achilles heel all year. I don’t see how we can’t hold onto the basketball.

After winning five straight, we’ve dropped two heart breakers. However, we said ten days ago if we could go 1-2 in the next three we’d basically be holding serve. While this is probably the toughest of the three, we’ve come to surprise people this year. Was I suprised when we lost to Youngstown St? Yes. Was I surprised when we lead number one Indiana at halftime? Yes. Will I be surprised when we beat Arkansas on the road? Who knows. But I do love surprises!
