Rockin' Rob Sherrell's' Uga Hoop Dawgs report - these hard-fighting guys deserve a win today
Posted on Feb 23, 2013 by Rob Sherrell |
Welcome to the Bulldawg Illustrated Hoops Report.
Fair warning! It can sometimes be like a recurring kick in the groin. Our Dawgs are coming off painful back to back road losses in which they left it all on the floor in both games. Much like the loss two games ago, the Arkansas game featured a very unfortunate technical foul call on an inadvertent elbow and the other team getting some very fortunate rolls around the rim late. Also, let’s not forget more turnovers than our opponents again. They both were really hard fought teams and the Dawgs never blinked. Let’s take a painful look back.
We got down 13 late in the first half versus the Razorbacks that were almost perfect at home. With wins against Florida and Missouri they were 16-1 at home with their lone loss to #6 Syracuse. We cut it to ten at the half and then fought our butts off the entire second half. All of sudden we tied it up and no one really even knew how it happened. KCP went about 30 minutes without scoring yet we were tied. He ended with 15 and is one of 11 players in the country to score double digits in everything game this year. Sherrard Brantley was the only other Dawg in double digits with 10. This team is tough as nails. They make the game ugly and teams don’t like to play them. I’d guess we held them to 19 or more below their home average. But in the end, it was the third straight loss. Arkansas had some very fortunate shots late that shouldn’t gone done. But they did and were back breakers. We shot late to tie on a drive but the stars were not aligned. But my goodness those guys fight.
Up next is South Carolina. Their conference record is not real good and their road record is probably worse. The game is a little scary because we’ve got to be reeling a bit right now. So who knows what will happen. I just like the way this team just goes out and plays. It’s not pretty. In reality, it’s uber ugly. Mark Fox deserves a lot of credit getting what he’s gotten this year. I just hope he can hold them together, finish strong, and improve every game.
Speaking of improvement, the freshman are getting more acclimated every game and are making contributions. Jurisic is usually an asset on the floor. Donte has a lot of ability and is starting to get a few more easy baskets which we thought has been there all year long. If KCP were to come back next year, it will not only benefit the team, but him as well. As we get more and more offensive options, he’ll get easier looks. The team will score more and win some games. I hope he realizes the draft is no guarantee. Just ask Travis Leslie. And while he’s looks to have a much better all-around game than Travis, NBA people can make odd decisions. Right now people think he has has the game for the next level. Let’s hope he wants to prove it to them because I’d sure love to see this team next year with him on it.
So get on down to the Stegasaurus. It a 2 p.m. start. I have no idea if we’ll win after the last two gut wrenchers, but I know I owe them my undivided attention for two hours.
Go Dawgs!
