Auburn visits Georgia tonight in hoops. For me, it begins a very busy stretch, nine games in nine days for three sports in four states. I’ve actually stepped into the early 21st century, and thanks to my buddy/rock star Mark Maxwell, am actually getting my own web site. I figure if my 14-year old prodige Houston Gaines can have one, why not?
My biggest concern for the fall is tailback. Washaun Ealey might have the best shot at being outstanding, and the little guy Carlton Thomas could be a counterpuncher. I really believe that Georgia will be fine at quarterback – but not as fine if the Bulldogs don’t have an elite tailback. And from what we saw last year, the dropoff from Knowshon Moreno was Grand Canyon like. I hate that Richard Samuel has to miss the spring with an injury. He’s still so young. It just looks like his fit might be at linebacker.
As fans, I would suggest something that I heard from former NFL exec, and current writer Michael Lombardi. Have honest evaluation of your own personnel. Don’t “wish” somebody into being great. It doesn’t work. This will also put expectations at a reasonable spot.
Georgia is the only team that has won at least eight games in 12 consecutive seasons. That might be around the number in 2009. If the quarterback and tailback of the future emerge in 2009, the Bulldogs will be a favorite to win the SEC East in 2010, as Tim Tebow will be gone at Florida.
But make no mistake, the talent level at Georgia is not where it was in the first half of the decade. Not having Jeff Owens and having only half of Dannell Ellerbe was just a killer. And Georgia really struggled at safety for the second half of the season. I mean the 2002 team had Thomas Davis and Greg Blue as BACKUPS!!!Hopefully the defensive backs Georgia signed last year and this year’s incoming freshmen will give the defense a huge boost this season and next.
This should be a great spring for Georgia. Expect every job to be up for grabs. Willie Martinez, who is an excellent coach, tremendous recruiter and great guy, is going to find out who wants to play! The win total may not show it, but Georgia will get some things back in the road this season. For all the injuries, it’s still baffling to think that over a five quarter period (1st h v Bama, 2nd h v Fla, 3rd q v tech) that the Bulldogs were outscored 92-7!!!!
By the way, the injuries had a huge trickle down blow to the special teams, which were just awful in the Florida, Kentucky, Auburn and Tech games. I think a healthier team will inherently lead to much improved play in the kicking game.
Here’s a quick guess at what the starting defense will be this fall – if the Dogs can (fingers crossed) stay healthy:
DE – Justin Houston
DT – Jeff Owens
DT – Geno Atkins (with Kade Weston and DeAngelo Tyson pushing)
DE – Rod Battle (with some serious push coming from underclassmen)
LB – Darryl Gamble
LB – Marcus Washington
LB – Rennie Curran
CB – Prince Miller
FS – ReShad Jones (feeling heat from youngsters)
SS – John Knox (Nick Williams and Baccarri Rambo will push)
CB – Brandon Boykin
Georgia’s secondary has to improve if the defense is to get better. Again, there should be great competition and players like Williams, Boykin, Rambo and Sanders Commings will really get a look – as will Brandon Smith.
The Bulldogs have signed a lot of linebackers, but a lot frankly haven’t produced.
The defensive interior should be outstanding. Georgia needs to get better play at end. The ‘08 season was the first of the decade that the Bulldogs didn’t have big time play at defensive end. Think how much better the ’07 defense got with the emergence of Marcus Howard at end and Rennie Curran at linebacker.
Since 2002, Georgia has had six double digit win seasons. Florida has had two. Florida and Tech came right at Georgia, playing with a purpose. If the Dogs don’t counterpunch back in ’09, its imperative that Georgia at least loads up for return knockout blows in 2010.
