Still no coach for Hoop Dawgs, time to call the General
Posted on Apr 1, 2009 by Vance Leavy |
Happy April Fool’s Day to all in the Bulldog Nation. To celebrate the prankster holiday, I thought about putting a bogus title on my blog claiming Georgia had hired a basketball coach.
Unfortunately way too many in the media have already mastered breaking that false story, so I avoided the temptation. It’s hard to fathom that so many journalists are risking their own creditability and their respect with the UGA athletic department to break the UGA basketball coach story. Perhaps such hastiness could be understood if we were talking about the football job. People in the Bulldog Nation have been waiting for the right basketball coach for decades and because of that all of us at Bulldawg Illustrated will certainly wait until we receive word from Claude Felton and company before posting anything on this coaching search that has turned into a hot potato with dwindling interest (at least from top name coaches).
With that being said, as I wrote in my editors note back in February that UGA athletic director, Damon Evans should at the very least talk to Bobby Knight about the hoops job. Perhaps the search committee has spoken to The General, but his name hasn’t come up once during the last two weeks of all this drama.
As the AJC’s Chip Towers story pinpointed today, the Dawgs are now to Plan B and not to talk to the coach with more wins than anyone when you’re desperately needing a coach is an absolute crying shame.
I understand Knight is divisive. Heck even people on our BI blog team don’t agree. (Cheri Leavy and Jeff Dantzler)
BUT FOR EVERYTHING THAT IS GEORGIA, at least talk to the man.
If that’s too much to handle, then my next choice would be President Obama’s brother-in-law, Craig Robinson. You gotta a love a guy that, in today’s world of accepting less and less from our youth, requires his players to look up words in the dictionary that they don’t know. Georgia going after Robinson would definitely be the first and probably last time, I actually agreed with the AJC’s Terence Moore.
Perhaps a week from now, the UGA basketball program will have advanced a long way from April Fool’s Day.
