Picking the wrong fight

There is a lot of chatter these days about moving the Florida game from Jacksonville. It is the wrong fight to pick.
The Florida game is esentially a home game for our south Georgia brethren, of which constitutes some of the largest boosters, and who routinely commute 5 hours for home games in Sanford Stadium. For those of us in other parts of the state, the game is an opportunity to get to the beach and enjoy one last hint of warm weather before the winter. Furthermore, the game is a huge boon for economies in SE Georgia. Leave the game in Jacksonville.
If a fight absolutely must be picked, then lets pick one over the schedule. I’ll argue all day long that the schedule is more of a liability than the plane ride, the heat, the name of the stadium, or any reason given for moving the game.
Over the past 20 years, we’ve only had 3 open dates prior to the Florida game, whereas the Gators have had 13. Georgia is 4-16 over that time frame. Break it down over the last 4 years (Richt vs. Meyer) and Georgia won the game in which we have had an open date but Florida didn’t (2007). Florida won the two games in which they had the open date and we didn’t (2005, 2006). Florida also won when we both had games the week prior, but they played Kentucky at home and we played LSU on the road (2008).
This year we have an open date and Florida plays MSU in the week before the game. Next year we revert to playing Arkansas while Florida again has an open date. If any breath has to be wasted on the inherent fairness of the Jacksonville game, I’d spend it on the schedule and lobby for more open dates prior to the Gators. Of course, we could just stop the whining entirely.
P.S. Take a look at our future schedules and, as they sit right now, 2009 is the last year Georgia has an open date before the Florida game until at least 2017.

I have a friend that is an Auburn alumni and he says that they always schedule an open date for both teams prior to the Iron Bowl game vs. Alabama. That seems like something we should look at. Maybe due to logistics it can't be done during the middle of the season (3rd week in October) but I'd like to hear it discussed, anyway. . . . . . We all know that SOS hates Georgia and prioritized that game and I hope that the UGA brass will put the same emphasis on the importance of beating the Gators as the reptiles have done against us since the Spurrier era began. . . . .Keep your chin up down there in enemy territory. I'm sure its rough seeing all of those Gator fans all the time :(
