Last week, the 2008 Georgia-North Avenue Trade School game replay aired on CSS. I could not help but watch.
After the first half, I felt like my dad did before we watched the Civil War drama, Gettysburg. “This time,” he explained, “we are going to win this thing.” I turned the channel after the halftime show, I couldn’t relive that Third Quarter.
We have all seen our fair share of Georgia meltdowns. I will never forget sitting next to a great Dawg couple form Watkinsville at last year’s Cocktail Party. Before the game, we were in high spirits. It just so happened that this was the family’s 26th Georgia-Florida game, and that the lady sitting next to my Phi Mu date was also a Phi Mu from days gone by.
They left in the first half.
“We’ve seen this happen too many times” they explained after we missed our second field goal, “to sit here and live through it again.”
That was one of the most humiliating losses I have ever witnessed. 49-10, lest we forget.
But, losing is a part of what makes it so special. Anybody can jump on the bandwagon after seeing a big win, but a true Dawg carries the scars form heartbreaking losses from season to season like a badge of honor.
So, what are your most memorble Georgia meltdowns? Let’s hear it and get pessimistic about the next season all Weeping-Wally Style.
In the meantime, I’m going to grab the remote and turn it to CSS again, maybe we already won this game.

I'm still scarred by Wake Forest '79. It was the opener and I'd looked forward to my 2nd trip ever to Athens all summer long. It was a beautiful day, we ate at the Varsity and Woerner had an early pick six. After that it got ugly as we could not tackle a TB named Kevin McDougal. John Mackovic's upstart Demon Deacons pulled off what seemed like a huge upset at the time. They went on to win 8 games and to to the Tangerine Bowl and we went 6-5. As a kid, that day was a disaster. Second would be Clemson 1981. I never thought we'd lose again with Herschel.
