Other Big Boys need to step up Schedules!

College football kicks off in two months, Georgia with arguably the toughest schedule in the country. Along with the annual grind of the toughest league in the land, featuring showdowns with Florida, LSU, Tennessee and Auburn. The Bulldogs tangle with Tech, as always, and both Oklahoma State of the Big 12 and Arizona State from the PAC-10.

When the NCAA went to a 12-game regular season schedule, the thinking was that this would lead to more attractive intersectional showdowns and the renewal of old rivalries that went away due to expanded conference schedules – such as Georgia/Clemson and Florida/Miami.

In the first two seasons of the 12-game schedule, this happened. Georgia played Clemson, Florida played Miami. Alabama took on Oklahoma and Auburn battled Southern Cal.

With the SEC blowing past the other leagues, the thinking is that one strong non conference opponent is enough, but for the other leagues, at least two would be nice. Give USC and Oklahoma credit. But the PAC 10, Big Ten and Big 12 in general need to do a better job. Texas plays UL Monroe, Wyoming, UTEP and Central Florida. Michigan plays Western and Eastern Michigan, Deleware State and the Irish. Michigan and Texas are the two winningest teams in college football history. They should do a lot better.

If the goal is to win a national championship, and in a BCS conference that means going undefeated (unless you're in the SEC when you can play for it with 1 or even 2 losses), it's understandable why the Longhorns and Florida pad their schedule with cupcakes. At the end of the day its about W's and L's, not branding the Georgia G to folks outside the Southeast, which is how we roll lately. But it goes both ways, if I'm paying a couple thousand for season tickets at Sanford Stadium, including my annual gift to the A.A., then I'm not going to be too thrilled to see North Texas and Tennessee Tech between the hedges. The SEC is tough enough, why overdo it and lose a game that will drop you in the polls?

I'm proud of what we've done schedule wise. I just wish I could make all the trips to the different campuses. We, or our AD, can only control what Georgia does and we can't help that others choose to soften their schedule. Don't forget how we plummeted from #1 to #3 because our wins over GSU and Central Michigan were off the radar. If we take advantage of our September schedule this year we could be in the top 5 and we'll be the national surprise. I also hate the patsy games we have to put on the schedule but there are economic and scheduling issues. Not to mention we had to fill in three games in recent years for Tulane backing out of a contract that we entered into when they were 12-0. Also, not enough is made of the fact we have been turned down by FSU, ND, and Michigan.
