July 1 College Football Notes

Georgia’s schedule is without question one of the toughest in the country. Along with the grind of the Southeastern Conference, Georgia plays Tech of the ACC, Arizona State from the PAC-10 and the Big XII’s Oklahoma State.

My good friend and sports information director extrordinaire Chris Lakos dug up that the Bulldogs are the first SEC school since the inception of the 12-game regular season schedule to face three BCS conference opponents.

My good friend and afternoon show co-host Chris Brame has dug up some early lines from the desert. Ole Miss, picked by some prognosticators to finish as high as No. 5 in the country, is favored in the Golden Nugget Sports Book, over Alabama by three, LSU by six and Tennessee by 13. Wow! Something like this probably didn’t even happen when Johnny Vaught was coaching in the Rebels hey-day of the ‘50’s and early ‘60’s. The Rebels sure have some high expectations. Ole Miss had better be ready for the opener with Memphis. The Rebels are favored by 17 in the Liberty Bowl.

Georgia is a 3.5 point underdog at Oklahoma State.

Texas had a huge historical season in 2008. The Longhorns moved past Notre Dame into second all-time behind Michigan in victories. Texas now stands alone in third behind the Wolverines and Fighting Irish in Winning Percentage, and the Longhorns have the second most bowl appearances ever.

Florida and Alabama are trying to buck history. Georgia, in 2002 and 2003, is the last East team to make back-to-back appearance in the SEC Championship Game. No team from the West has gone to consecutive title tilts since Alabama went to the first three from 1992-94.

LSU has been to the SEC Championship Game in every odd numbered year this decade (or for dramatic purposes, this century).

All three Heisman Trophy finalists from last season were draft eligible and they all returned to college. That may never happen again.

Throughout history, when georgia reads the papers, comments in the paper they lose. Last year was great example, especially Richt's comments the week of the 'bama game. They seem to be on the same track this year but a lot lower volume. Its better to do it on the field and not in the papers. Ask our OL coach how he does it.
