BI Blog Roll: Best Blogs that Cover the Dawgs

Last week, the Monday post took a look around the conference to review some of the best SEC Blogs.

This week, we are keeping things closer to home with a look at the best online coverage of the Dawgs. A steady review of these blogs will keep you up-to-date on all UGA news, and predicting what storylines ESPN will play up during TV time outs.

So, in no particular order, here they are:

Georgia Sports Blog

Sharp writing, solid coverage of UGA sports across the board, and little insider tips make this among my personal favorite sports blogs. The posts are short, insightful, and always have great pictures. Some highlights from this blog’s past include leaked pictures of the junked Ramblin’ Wreck and the TECH Fund checkout code so UGA fans could buy mini-season ticket packages for the Georgia game at the Joke by Coke in 2007. Damn Good Dawgs!

Dawg Sports

T. Kyle King could write a novel about shade patterns at different SEC stadiums, but it would still be good enough to read to the end. And then comment on.

Get the Picture

Two priceless things about this blog:

1. The writer’s alias: Senator Blutarsky, of Animal House fame.

2. The Banner Picture of an uber-hip Vince Dooley straight chillin’ with James Brown.

Battle Hymn Notes

Written by two dear friends from UGA who have gone on to face the real world, BHNotes reads like a conversation at the Mayflower: fun, easy, and ending too quickly.

Bulldogs Blog

David Hale is one of Georgia’s leading beat writers. What separates this blog from the others is his ability to key in on what is going on in the players minds as they head into the season. Its funny how so many writers get so caught up in traditions and trends that we think rule the game. A lot of times the players aren’t even aware of such things, as evidenced in some of Hale’s videos and interviews.

Some other notable blogs worth checking out:

-Hey Jenny Slater Funny. Vulgar. Gold.

-Bubba ’N Earl “Sittin on the fifta…”

-Catfish and Cornbread On what I hope is a short hiatus

-Dawgbone On hiatus, but rumored to be coming back in August

Thoughts? Which ones did I miss?

Ryan, your list is excellent but I'd include a few more. I'd include Bill King from AJC.com to your list. He is an Athens-raised, long time season ticket holder that can comment on the Dawgs from a perspective which spans many decades. His blog can be found on the AJC website under "Junkyard Blawg". The only thing to be weary of is the hijacking of the comments section by some GT posters. NERDS; they probably have a computer program figured out that auto-comments as soon as he posts his new entry. I'd also include a former Dawg player, Rex Robinson, and current stud defensive lineman, Jeffery Owens (although he hasn't posted much of late; his previous blogs are worth reading). Rex Robinson is at roughingthekicker.com and Jeff Owens is at jeffowens95.blogspot.com

Ryan Scates said:

Those are great additions. UGA has to be the best represented program on the internet.

Ally said:

Great list Ryan! Building on what Andrew started i'd have to say Blogging Pantsless (bloggingpantsless.blogspot.com) is also one of the best Georgia blogs out there. Mackie is a rabid Dawg fan and writes hilarious posts.

SSB Charley said:

Although I may be partial because I a) know the author and II) can relate, I'm rather fond of Bulldog in Exile.

Senator Blutarsky said:

Ryan, thanks very much for the shout-out. I'm flattered.

Streit said:

Thanks for mentioning Bubba N' Earl as part of your list. Another great blog to check out is our good firend Bernie at http://berniesdawgblawg.blogspot.com/

Please never consider Bill King... he is one of the people that make me embarrassed to call myself a Bulldog fan - he's too critical while claiming the love for the Dogs. He's one of those old fans that probably cusses Richt, Bobo, Martinez, and the players after every play that isn't perfect. Those fans have made Sanford Stadium unenjoyable today which is rather unfortunate. I love the Dogs and don't pretend to know everything that should occur... because if you've ever coached you would know that the outsiders usually don't know every scheme and the philosophy behind your program. I will leave the coaching to the coaches... Bill, maybe you can learn something from that! Bill King - just be the armchair quarterback you are and keep your negative opinions to yourself - quit writing! You bring nothing to the Dawg nation - no depth whatsoever! David Hale is by far the best writer for the Dogs though some of the other writers bring humor and various viewpoints to certain things going on in and around our team. David brings accuracy, positive yet honest assessment of the team. I love reading his blog daily. Go Dawgs and thanks to everyone who covers our team - except Bill - you're awful.

Mackie said:

Thanks for the mention Ally, but yeah I gotta go with Bernie's Dawg Blog as well. I've met the guy over lunch and he's a filthy treacherous cretin...but he's got the news even during low-season.

Bernie said:

filthy treacherous cretin....I'm touched Mack! The next frosted orange is on me. Great post Ryan. Completely agree that the Dawgs are representin' over the internets. My personal inspiration has been Exhile. Man's a rock to live out there and show those midwesterners what SEC football is all about. And though he's often drenched in bourbon...MikeInValdosta's Bloggin' Under the Influence is top notch.

Bill King said:

Thanks for the mention, Andrew. Much appreciated. As for "No Way," I've encountered folks over the years who think that if you ever utter a critical word about something, you're not a "fan." I think that's pretty ridiculous. I'm a big Beatles fan. Have been since 1964. I've spent 30 years publishing a magazine about them as a sideline. I've traveled far and wide to see the solo Beatles in concert. Do I love every recording Paul McCartney has put out? Of course, not. If you can't tell the crap from the masterworks, you aren't a fan, you're a fanboy. I love "The Andy Griffith Show" and have been a fan of it since boyhood. I've even attended a couple of fan conventions. I can recite dialog from many episodes verbatim and my brothers and I speak to each other often in "Mayberryese." And yet, like many fans, I consider most of the color episodes to be inferior and some of them just plain bad. Does that make me not a fan? Don't be silly. The same applies to the Bulldogs. I've been following them all my life, having grown up in Athens, and get chillbumps thinking about the many highlights I've seen over the years. But does that mean I can criticize playcalling or question some of the things that are done? If so, then probably 80 percent of the folks I've encountered in 40-plus years of attending games in Sanford Stadium no longer qualify as a "fan" in your estimation. I'm a Bulldogs fan. I'm not a cheerleader.

Bill King said:

Typo alert in the above comment: That should be: "Does that mean I can't criticize ..."

David Hale said:

Thanks for the shout out, Ryan. I'm just glad to be mentioned in such a great group, and I couldn't agree more with your comment that UGA has the best representation of any program on the net. Oh, and Bernie's definitely a treacherous cretin, but is occasionally well groomed, so filthy may be slightly strong.

Andrew Miller said:

Bill, I wholeheartedly agree with your take in response to No Way, and will take it a step further. I think it is important to criticize the leadership when you see something going wrong. Much like an elected official you may have voted for, it doesn't mean you have to agree with every decision they make while in office. I think it is asinine to assume that we as fans will sit there in lock-step with the coaching staff when it is quite obvious that something is going wrong. Criticizing the president (regardless of who is in office) doesn't make you any less patriotic, and criticizing the coaches or the administration doesn't make one any less of a Dawg fan. No Way, I do agree with you that David Hale is an excellent reporter and blogger.

Gruff and Grump said:

Good list there Ryan. Bill, we love your column. We also like the fact you were able to send our message of whining about things to a larger forum. Though a month later, we were happy the word reached more readers. Keep up the good work.

JJ said:

C&C is on brief hiatus. Thanks much for the kudos. Getting caught up on the countdown, and will kick the 2009 previews into high gear very soon. Thanks again.

After 25 years and over 10,000 performances, the Tony award winning musical "Les Misérables" is finally becoming a movie, and photographers in London snagged the first shots of Hugh Jackman in costume as the lead character, Jean Valjean. It looks like Jackman is filming scenes for the beginning of the story, where Jean Valjean has been imprisoned for 19 years for stealing bread. With his bushy beard, scarred, gaunt face, and tattered clothes, you'd barely know that the man best known as Wolverine was also playing Prisoner 24601. While Jackman got his start in musicals and has performed on Broadway twice, this will be his first movie musical. Jackman tweeted last month that he was rehearsing with Claude-Michel Sch?nberg, the composer of the musical, who has written a new song for Jackman for the film. He also noted he was working with Colm Wilkinson, the actor originated the role of Valjean in London, who will also appear in the movie. Jackman will be joined in the film by Russell Crowe, who will play Valjean's adversary, Inspector Javert. Reportedly, Crowe was the first choice to play Wolverine in the original "X-Men" movie, but he passed and the role went to the then-unknown Jackman.
