Signing day. The day for high school seniors all over the country to make an important decision about their future, as they take pictures in their new team’s logo, their moms cry about how proud they are and their coaches cry about their next season without their best player. For the University of Georgia, it is the day all the months of hard work and stress from coaches and staff come together to present the newest recruiting class. For me, today was the day I faced the realities of my last Bulldawg football season as a student.
I have seen some exciting things my two and a half years here at UGA. Two National Titles from our Gym Dawgs, and SEC Championship from our men’s basketball team, an appearance in the College World Series from our Diamond Dawgs…the list goes on and on.
But as I stood in the back of the pressroom while Coach Richt and Coach Garner talked about the future of our football team, I have to admit it gave me a strange feeling. It could be the fact that I had just then realized how soon my last games would come. But it could be all the talk about our depth issues in the receiving position or the changes in our defense. I think about the players we need to replace, and when I look at the list of new recruits, I hope I’m looking at the new Jeff Owens and Rennie Curran. Let’s be honest though, those players don’t emerge overnight. I can’t help but get excited when Coach Richt talks about the “buzz around Butts-Mehre,” and how proud they are of the new class. But reality strikes again. A reporter asks about losing a major recruit to Tennessee. Figures.
Change is good. Right? I’m sure every 20-year-old girl loses sleep at night about a 3-4 over a 4-3 defense, but I have faith in our new Defensive Coordinator. I also have faith that veterans will step up to the changes and still be successful. Sure we will have to make some adjustments on the other side of the ball as well, and the journey to find our starting quarterback has already begun. But change is good, and inevitable.
After today, I am just grateful there are so many other UGA sports to distract me until September comes, but when it does, one thing I do know is Sanford Stadium will be filled with anxious fans just like myself. Group Therapy.
