Dawgs Need Touchdowns

Some common traits in Georgia’s three wins over the Gators since 1997, the Bulldogs have struck first, jumping to 7-0 leads. The Bulldogs have had a tailback go for over 100 yards in all three wins, highlighted by a four touchdown performance from Robert Edwards in 1997, and Knowshon Moreno’s 188 yard, three touchdown showing in 2007.
And it comes down to getting touchdowns. In the Mark Richt era, Georgia scored 10 touchdowns in the wins over the two wins over the Gators in ’04 and ’07. In the seven losses, Georgia scored a scant nine touchdowns.
What’s compounded the Bulldogs inability to score touchdowns is poor kicking in Jacksonville. For whatever the reason, Bulldog field goal kickers have struggled mightily in the old Gator Bowl. And these are terrific kickers. Billy Bennett missed seven kicks in Jacksonville. Brandon Coutu had his only two miss game there in ’05 and Blair Walsh missed twice in ’08.
All three , All-SEC performers.
Got to get touchdowns to beat the Gators.

Well put, JD. We need to average better than 2.1 touchdowns per game, as we have during the Richt era, if we expect to beat UF consistently. I hope that Richt has someone lined up to give a particularly fiery pre-game speech this week!
