Yesterday I was able to hear former Bulldog golfer, Chip Beck speak twice and I must say his zest for life is certainly contagious.
Beck was in town for Media Day of the Stadion Athens Classic at Uga that will take place April 29- May 2nd at the Uga Golf Course. The former PGA tour and now Champion tour golfer was tabbed by UGA president, Michael Adams to be the honorary chairman of the annual PGA Nationwide event.
Adams nailed it with his choice of Beck because the man loves the three main components of the event … golf, the University of Georgia and giving back to the community.
All three of these will be front and center in a little over a month when some of the best golfers in the nation arrive in the Classic City.
I played the Uga course yesterday and it is in great shape and is as difficult as ever. The professionals are sure to say the same thing and will be equally impressed with what all Athens has to offer as far as food and culture.
And the proceeds from the tournament will certainly have a positive effect on Athens with the Tickets Fore Charity program. 100% of ticket sales go to the charity that sells the tickets or there are dozens you can choose when ordering online. Either way, it’s a win and win for the tournament and the community.
And even neater is the fact that all profits (outside of ticket sales) will go to need-based student scholarships for Uga through the Arch Foundation.
It should be an awesome event indeed. Make your plans now to join Chip Beck next month here in Athens. Here is a link to yesterday’s press conference.

Although it was hard to leave sunny St. Simons this morning, I must say the drive up to God’s other favorite destination (Athens) was fantastic. With temperatures in the mid-sixties and The Cure blasting in my car, the five hour trek was over in a flash.
I made it just in time to go out on the practice fields to see our boys go back to work for what will prove to be the most important spring drills during the Richt era.
As I have mentioned in the past, the media is given zero love when it comes to watching practices. Our 20 minutes consist of watching random drills as the players are normally grouped in their positions.
Since my closest access was to new defensive coach, Warren Belin, I listened in to see what he was all about. I loved the fact that he is all business and wants what he is teaching done to perfection.
“We’re going to do it all day … you guys act like you’ve never done bag drills before,” Belin barked. And then he continued, “I want us to move fellas … do it my way.”
However Belin was quick to offer praise to Marcus Dowtin when he earned it.
As far as first encounters go, I’m a big fan of Belin. His body and mind are in great shape, which should equate to success for our defense.
On the offensive side, I went and watched Zach Mettenberger. And as I said on Twitter, don’t you know he is glad to be back with the football program after spending all of last week with his parents after getting in trouble at the beginning of spring break.
I’m a huge underdog person and I sincerely hope that this low moment for Zach catapults him to the next level on the football field. We were all young once and some of us were luckier than others. Since Zach wasn’t, he must now realize the bullseye is now even bigger.
Mark Richt, Aaron Murray and Mike Bobo all commented on Mettenberger’s situation after practice. Their guidance will certainly be a bonus for the young QB.
I must say how impressed I was with Aaron Murray. He has matured a ton since last season and it is obvious he has the skill set to lead the 2010 team.
However I’m most optimistic that the new season is going to bring a steady dose of the offensive line and running backs. Folks like Clint Bolin and Washaun Ealey are poised to bring Georgia back to the days of Tailback U.
The Dawgs have tomorrow off and will be back on the practice field on Thursday.

As spring practice will crank back up for Georgia, let’s take a look at some different areas for the Bulldogs.
The offensive line should certainly be a strength, Georgia with almost all of its frontline players back, in addition to a nice crop of redshirts, and then come fall, some true freshmen and hopefully junior Trinton Sturdivant, a freshman All-American on Georgia’s 2007 squad that finished No. 2 nationally, who has suffered a pair of major knee injuries.
Clint Boling and Cordy Glenn on the left side at tackle and guard, anchor the front, and Ben Jones is back at center. The competition figures to be hot and heavy with Josh Davis and Chris Davis figuring in the mix, along with Justin “Bean” Anderson, who can play guard or tackle.
Amongst the redshirt freshmen to keep an eye is Chris Burnette, a highly touted guard who was the salutatorian of his senior high school class.
Stacy Searels is an excellent O-Line coach, he’s got talent, depth and experience – plus a group that has to have sky-high confidence after plowing through Tech in the regular season finale, as the Bulldogs amassed over 300 yards on the ground.
There will be growing pains at quarterback and quite likely on defense, as Georgia goes through a series of adjustments, so for the Bulldogs to contend for a trip to Atlanta, the O-Line must play big in 2010.
