Georgia Student-Athletes record academic excellence for Fall 2012

ATHENS, Ga. - The University of Georgia women’s tennis team earned the highest cumulative grade point average (GPA) for a UGA sports team for the fall 2012 semester with an overall 3.61 GPA. The men’s tennis team notched the highest GPA for men’s sports, with a 3.06 GPA among the 10 members.

As a whole, the 553 student-athletes enrolled at the University of Georgia earned a cumulative GPA of 2.96 for the semester. Of the 553 student-athletes, 22 received a 4.0 GPA and 116 earned a 3.50-3.99 GPA. A total of 292 (206 scholarship; 86 non-scholarship) student-athletes earned a GPA over 3.00 for the semester.

In second and third place in terms of cumulative GPA rankings were the women’s gymnastics and women’s swimming and diving teams, respectively. The 16 members of the gymnastics squad earned a 3.30 GPA, while the 28 swimmers and divers combined for a 3.22 GPA.

The equestrian team earned a cumulative 3.16 GPA among the 70 student-athletes. The 11-member women’s golf squad recorded a 3.14 GPA. The women’s cross country team tallied a 3.07 GPA among its 25 team members.

The women’s soccer and men’s cross country teams each earned a 3.04 GPA. The women’s soccer team has a roster of 29 student-athletes, while the men’s cross country team is made up of 13 members.

The men’s swimming and diving team notched a 3.03 GPA among its 27 members. The roster of 16 women’s softball players earned a 2.95 GPA. The women’s track team used 64 student-athletes to combine for a 2.90 GPA. The men’s golf team, consisting of 10 members, cumulated a 2.89 GPA. The 50-member men’s track team tallied a 2.87 GPA.

The women’s volleyball team recorded a combined GPA of 2.85 among its 15 members. The 124 student-athletes on the football team finished the semester with a cumulative GPA of 2.714. The men’s baseball team used a 49-player roster to register a 2.713 GPA. The 14 women’s basketball players combined for a 2.57 GPA, while the 14 men’s basketball players earned a 2.29 GPA.
