Hoop Dogs Tame the Tigers, 67-58

ATHENS, Ga.—Sophomore guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 22 points and had six steals to help Georgia to its first SEC victory of the season, winning 67-58 over LSU Saturday night at Stegeman Coliseum.

Georgia (7-10, 1-3 SEC) used an 11-4 run in the final five minutes of the game to secure its seventh victory of the season.

Junior forward Donte’ Williams also contributed 14 points. Sophomore forward Nemanja Djurisic led the Bulldogs on the boards with eight rebounds.

“I’m just really proud of our team and their composure tonight,” said head coach Mark Fox. “LSU has a talented, hard-nosed team, and they’re a really good team, too. I’m just proud of my team, though. We haven’t had a lot of confidence this season, but our team has had to overcome that, and I think we got a good start tonight."

The Bulldogs led for nearly the entire first half, and carried a four point halftime lead into the locker room.

In the second half, Georgia surged to an 41-33 lead after a successful three-point play from Donte’ Williams. Shortly after the Tigers put together a run of their own to go up 47-45 off of an Anthony Hickey three-pointer.

After trading baskets on multiple possessions, and the game tied 54-54 with just under five minutes left in the game, Georgia went on an 11-4 run to put the game out of reach.

The game featured eight lead changes and seven ties.

The Tigers were led by Johnny O’Bryant who tallied his third double-double of the season with 16 points and 14 rebounds.

Georgia’s defense forced 21 turnovers and held LSU to just six assists.

Worth Noting…
• For only the sixth time this season, Georgia used a starting line-up that it had used before.
• Caldwell-Pope has led Georgia in scoring in 14 of Georgia’s 17 games this season. He has yet to score fewer than 11 points.
• Georgia forced LSU to have 21 turnovers while limiting the Tigers to just 6 assists. Entering the game, LSU had a +1.0 assist-to-turnover ratio.

The Series: Georgia improves to 26-21 in games played in Athens….LSU still leads the all-time series 61-42…Since 1992-93, Georgia has won 15 of the 26 meetings…Since 1995-96 season, the home team has won all but four times in 17 meetings (excludes three neutral site games)

Next Up: Georgia will host Florida at Stegeman Coliseum on Wednesday at 8 p.m. Florida leads the all-time series 106-99, but Georgia leads the series 62-36 when the game is played in Athens. Since 2008-09 season, Georgia is 3-1 in games in Athens, with its only loss coming in a double overtime thriller, 104-91….The Gators defeated Georgia earlier this season
