Georgia Posts 197.000 in victory over Stanford

Jan 22, 2013 by Georgia Sports Communications

ATHENS, Ga. -— Junior Lindsey Cheek helped lead the Gym Dogs to their finest performance of the season and a win over 10th-ranked Stanford with three individual season highs and one career high. Georgia won all four events resulting in a final score of 197.000-195.400.

This is the Gym Dog’s highest score of the 2013 season and fifth-highest in the country to date. In today’s win, the Gym Dogs put up a season-high eight scores of 9.9 or higher.

“This meet was much more complete than our previous meets this season,” said head coach Danna Durante. “We have that consistency and experience from the upperclassmen, and then to bring the freshman in adds a nice spark. To see them really light up when they hit it, and everybody else light up with them is really exciting.”

The Gym Dogs began the day with a season-high 49.4 on vault. Freshmen Brittany Rogers and Brandie Jay both posted career-high 9.9s, while Cheek and sophomore Chelsea Davis scored season-highs of 9.925 and 9.85, respectively. With a 48.85 on bars for Stanford, Georgia headed into the second rotation with a strong lead.

After a 49.4 on bars, Georgia had its highest two-rotation score of the season with 98.8. Jay and Davis tied for first with a 9.9. It was the fourth-straight bars title for Davis. Rogers (9.875), Cheek (9.875) and senior Shayla Worley (9.85) all tied or broke their season highs on the event as well. The Cardinal posted a 49.125 on vault, giving the Gym Dogs a lead of .825.

Junior Kaylan Earls led Georgia on beam with a 9.9, a tie for her career high. Cheek recorded her career high with a 9.875 in the leadoff spot. Stanford was forced to count a 9.025 on floor, resulting in a combined team score of 48.375 on the event. With a 48.825 on beam, the Gym Dogs headed into the final rotation with a lead of 147.625-146.350, setting a new three-rotation score high.

Georgia set another team season high on the floor with a 49.375. Earls and Junior Cat Hires both turned in their career highs with a 9.9 for Earls and a 9.875 for Hires. Stanford closed the meet with a 49.05 on beam.

“It feels great to finally put a meet together,” said Cheek. “We still were a little shaky on beam. It means we need to go back in the gym and keep improving. We don’t stop here; 197 isn’t where it stops. We have to keep improving, keep getting better.”

Georgia competes next at the Metroplex Challenge in Fort Worth, Texas, on Jan. 26 at 8 p.m. They will return home on Feb. 2 to face No. 5 Alabama at 4 p.m. The meet will be televised on FSN on Feb. 9 at 4 p.m.
