Ex-Bulldog Colwill Wins Winter National Championship

Feb 7, 2010 by Georgia Sports Communications

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Former Georgia diver Chris Colwill won the men’s 3-meter springboard title on Saturday at the USA Diving Winter National Championship and World Cup Trials.

Colwill, who also won his quarterfinal and semifinal rounds on Thursday, finished with a total of 1,024.60 points. Second place went to Kristian Ipsen, who scored 992.50 points.

“Chris dove great, and he definitely was the class of the meet,” Georgia diving coach Dan Laak said. “He was very confident. He didn’t miss a dive all weekend. I am real proud of him and very excited for him.”

It was Colwill’s eighth career national championship – three on 1-meter, three in synchronized and two on 3-meter.

“I came in here with a different approach,” Colwill said. “I wanted to have more fun than I usually do and I wanted to focus on the small things that make a huge difference, which was focusing on the form to get the extra point. I’m really glad with the way I handled myself in terms of competing because I haven’t competed like that in a long time. That gives me confidence when I go back home to train.”

The first two finishers in each event qualified for the USA Diving Grand Prix in May in Fort Lauderdale and June’s FINA Diving World Cup in Changzhou, China. The third- and fourth-place finishers earned spots for the Grand Prix.
