Former UGA Athletic Association staff member Hornsby Howell passed away last week on October 3.

 
 
Howell served in several capacities with the Bulldogs from 1982-96. He joined the Georgia staff in March of 1982, as the football scout team coach under Bulldog head coach Vince Dooley. He held positions with football on-campus recruiting, Administrative Assistant to the Athletic Director, and Coordinator of the UGA Student-Athlete Development and Career Placement Service from 1985-94. Howell was named Director of the UGA Student-Athlete Development and Career Placement Service in April of 1994. On July 1, 1996, he was named Interim Athletic Director at Savannah State College.
 
 
Before returning to his hometown of Athens in 1982, he served as Assistant Athletic Director at North Carolina A&T for five years. He previously held the head football coaching position at A&T and was chosen three times as the conference Coach of the Year. Howell graduated from A&T in 1950 after which he held numerous positions with the Aggie staff. He was a very successful football coach at A&T, winning conference Coach of the Year honors three times (1968, ’73 and ’75) and was named 1968 National Coach of the Year by the 100 Percent Wrong Club of Atlanta. His 1968 team posted a 9-1 record and he followed with marks of 8-2 in 1973 and 9-2 in 1975.
